About Artwork

This painting was made in Sacramento, CA, 2026.

The first thing White Night establishes is density. The field is thick with mark and color—greens worked in short strokes, then interrupted by flower heads in pink, magenta, red, and violet. The black paper keeps the palette high-contrast, so every bright touch feels intentional, even when it stays rough.

The figures arrive as a sequence. One nude body anchors the lower right foreground, crouched or stepping forward with an arm reaching into the grass. Three more stand behind in a loose line: tall on the left, smaller at center, and another on the right. The spacing creates depth without clean perspective; the bodies stack like remembered positions rather than a posed group.

Faces are handled as fields of rubbed pigment—reds and browns with pale highlights—enough to signal a head and gaze, not enough to claim identity. That withholding shifts the charge onto posture: shoulders angled, hips set, the forward reach of the arm, the quiet uprightness of the figure on the left.

The landscape keeps the same economy. A purple mass on the left reads as a flowering bush or slope, dense and vertical, while the horizon is cut by dark hills and a cool blue ridge. Above it, the sky glows: yellow near the horizon, then a pale, cooler band that suggests long twilight.
